Breathe easy 2004-1-23(mid-day)

Pic: Suresh KK In A tiny Vile Parle computer institute two boys, Divakar Ghodake (25) and Abdul Rahama Kotwala (20), students of Arena Animation Academy, Vile Parle crafted a dream.
It got realised when they received a letter from the director of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) Limited India, stating that their documentary film titled Respiration The Noble Truth was selected in the competition section of MIFF 2004 (February 3-9).
When I sent the print to Films Division I had to fill the form, said Ghodake with a sunny smile. The clerk at the counter asked me, India ya international and at the spur of the moment I decided, loonga to international ka hi loonga.
Respiration The Noble Truth is a silent film that uses voiceover to convey the Vipaasana concept that breath is the only truth and that there is a direct relationship between respiration and thoughts. Besides the voiceover, the only other sound in the film is that of inhalation and exhalation.
This animation film was digitally-done on computer, minus props or any shooting equipment. Direction modeling and animation of the film were entirely done by Ghodake while Kotwala took care of the lighting and texture. The 19-minute documentary film was completed in seven months.
Ghodake is a dropout from JJ School of Arts. When he couldnt continue the course and he had time on his hands he did a six month animation course from Arena and took up making this film as part of the course.
Kotwala too has a similar story to tell. There were times when we felt we reached a dead-end, he says. On the home front, too, pressure to earn and bring home money was high.
Luck smiled on the boys. First Arena Vile Parle franchisee Naresh Choudhary supported them through their venture and then came the selection as digital artists by Rhythm and Hues Studios, a US based visual FX (VFX) company that is known for its VFX assignments on Daredevil and The Sum of All Fears and Alien Resurrection.
With good jobs in hand, the two can breathe easy and, hopefully, their luck will play on for their film Respiration.
